A few rules.

1.Never stop thinking. This is important. If someone ever says to you ‘You need to stop thinking so much,’ call them ignorant in your head and keep thinking deeper. It is this mentality that breeds stupidity and sheeple. Your mind is the most important tool you have, if you stop using it, it will atrophy. Question everything.

2. Stare into space blankly and don’t mentally punish yourself for doing it, even if it is for that split second. If you have a problem with staring blankly, think of it as daydreaming.

3. Root Beer sucks after having spicy food.

4. Everything is going to be just fine. If you worry about acne, you’re going to get a fucking pimple.

5. Don’t be afraid to talk about anything. You shouldn’t be afraid of reality.

6. Everyone is a hypocrite.

7. You are all original. Every life experience is case sensitive and unique. Every time you wake up or go to the bathroom or quote someone else, you are becoming more you than anyone has ever been.

8. Do pointless things. Don’t actively restrain or hide yourself from the redundant.

9. Stop rushing. Shut up and embrace the sound of silence.

10. Religion shouldn’t be taught, it should be found. No one should tell you what to believe except you. And while were on the subject…

11. Don’t be restrained by one religion. People change every moment of everyday. Minds grow and evolve. Religion has no law so feel free to mix and match. Make your own.

12. Going to the bathroom is not a right nor a privilege. it’s an act of nature.

13. Talking to yourself is healthy. Is there anyone that you have more in common with?

14. There is no such thing as time. The sun never sets or rises. Days and years don’t exist. There is only your life. Earlier today you were born and death is predicted later in the evening.

15. We will always be in a transitional phase. Look outside and know that everything will be replaced at some point. This existence is temporary.

16. Its not half empty or half full. Its half a glass.

17. Every now and then take something that you see everyday and try to see it in a different light. Renew its existence.

18. Be happy, but don’t force it.

19. You will always succeed in trying.

20. We are all crazy. Every person you read about in the history books had some kind of ‘disorder’, they just knew how to use it.

21. We are all about as similar as we are different.

22. Ideas are just as valuable as people. Why do you think we keep making people?

87. Numbers don’t have to go in order.

24. Words will always be just words. Love is just another four letter word, only the feeling is real.

25. Ask a child for advice. They may not know much, but they know what is important.

26. Prove you’re alive. Do anything from dancing in the supermarket to screaming ‘Fuck’ during a moment of silence. Remind the world you are still here.

27. Don’t take anything, even this, too seriously.

Hedgehog's dilemma
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
For the Neon Genesis Evangelion episode, see Hedgehog's Dilemma (Neon Genesis Evangelion episode).
Not to be confused with the Hedgehog Concept from Good to Great

The hedgehog's dilemma, or sometimes the porcupine dilemma, is an analogy about the challenges of human intimacy. It describes a situation in which a group of hedgehogs all seek to become close to one another in order to share their heat during cold weather. However, once accomplished, they cannot avoid hurting one another with their sharp quills. They must step away from one another. Though they all share the intention of a close reciprocal relationship, this may not occur for reasons which they cannot avoid.
Both Arthur Schopenhauer and Sigmund Freud have used this situation to describe what they feel is the state an individual will find themselves in relation to others. The hedgehog's dilemma suggests that despite goodwill, human intimacy cannot occur without substantial mutual harm, and what results is cautious behavior and weak relationships. With the hedgehog's dilemma one is recommended to use moderation in affairs with others both because of self-interest, as well as out of consideration for others. The hedgehog's dilemma is used to justify or explain introversion and isolationism.
Contents [hide]
[edit] Schopenhauer
The concept originates from German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer's Parerga und Paralipomena, Volume II, Chapter XXXI, Section 396.[1] In his English translation, E.F.J. Payne translates the German "Stachelschweine" as "porcupines". Schopenhauer's parable describes a number of hedgehogs who need to huddle together for warmth and who struggle to find the optimal distance where they may feel sufficiently warm without hurting one another. The hedgehogs have to sacrifice warmth for comfort. Schopenhauer draws the conclusion that, if someone has enough internal warmth, they can avoid society and the giving and receiving of psychological discomfort that results from social interaction.
[edit] Freud
It entered the realm of psychology after the tale was discovered and adopted by Sigmund Freud. Schopenhauer’s tale was quoted by Freud in a footnote to his 1921 essay Group Psychology and the Analysis of the Ego. Freud stated that his trip to America in 1919 was because: “I am going to America to catch sight of a wild porcupine and to give some lectures.”[2]
[edit] Social psychological research
The dilemma has received empirical attention within the contemporary psychological sciences. Jon Maner and his colleagues (Nathan DeWall, Roy Baumeister, and Mark Schaller) referred to Schopenhauer's "porcupine problem" when interpreting results from experiments examining how people respond to ostracism and other forms of social rejection.[3] Their results revealed that, for people who are chronically anxious, the experience of rejection led people to be relatively anti-social; but among people with more optimistic dispositions, the experience of rejection led to intensified efforts to get close to others. They concluded,
Citation:
This last point is worth remembering when one considers the answer that Schopenhauer himself supplied to the porcupine problem. Schopenhauer suggested that people ultimately feel compelled to retain a safe distance from each other. "By this arrangement," he wrote, "the mutual need for warmth is only very moderately satisfied; but then people do not get pricked" (1851/1964, p. 226). Of course, Schopenhauer was known for his sour temperament – "It is hard to find in his life evidences of any virtue except kindness to animals… In all other respects he was completely selfish" (Russell, 1945, p. 758) – and his philosophy was famous for its pessimism. So it is not surprising that he resigned his porcupines to a life spent shivering in the cold, fearing pain from other porcupines’ sharp quills. In real life however, the porcupine problem is often resolved in far more sociable a manner. For many people, the potential pain of prickly quills is trumped by the powerful need for social warmth.[4]

[edit] Cultural references
In Qian Zhongshu's novel "Fortress Besieged", a character explicitly deliberates about the dilemma.
The hedgehog's dilemma appears as a Neon Genesis Evangelion episode Hedgehog's Dilemma, and as a defining trait of series protagonist Shinji Ikari.
Hedgehog's Dilemma is the title of a song and EP by Jani Galbov (Maxis).[5]
"Hedgehog's Dilemma" is the title of a two part song spanning the second and third tracks of The Postman Syndrome's release "Terraforming". [6]

Another year
Posted by Jade, Filed under General
“Twenty-four finds me in twenty-fourth place.” Well that turned out to be oddly prophetic for my year, I think. Twenty-five carries the connotation of a whole new era for me, and that’s exciting, but also a little scary. It marks a time when I’m learning to let go of some of my naive conceptions and questioning others.
A quarter of a century. Yikes. It might not be so scary if I felt I had a little more direction– which brings me to my lyrics for this year from Snow Patrol’s Chocolate:

I can make my first steps
As a child of 25

I can only hope for them to be a little prophetic as well. Hopefully this is the year I find that direction…

Full Lyrics

Jimmy Eat World’s A Praise Chorus also jumped out at me last week. It was one of my favorites on Bleed American and the line, “Even at twenty-five you gotta start sometime” suits me quite well for the upcoming year as well. Listen
Either way– so long to 24. It’ll certainly go down in the books as an epic year– some good, some bad, but all undeniably epic.

Outlet
Posted by Jade, Filed under Thoughts
I wish I had an artistic bone in my body. An affinity for sketching or arranging words. Or pleasing vocal chords. Sometimes I just feel like my soul needs an outlet. Clearly this is one of those restless moments. Otherwise I probably wouldn’t be babbling so incessantly on my blog tonight.
Maybe a hot bath will soak the restlessness away.

Kurt Halsey

I finally bought some Halsey prints.

Limited edition, signed.

“If only I knew the words to the songs you know”
Digital print on linen paper.
Most definitely need to frame them, but I think I’ll have them matted as well.
And I’m really looking for a print of Swingsetters to round it out.

I’d grab this one if I found it.

Ideally
Posted by Jade, Filed under Thoughts
I suppose I’ll have to find my ideal Me before I can find my ideal him. But I find it hard not to get caught up concentrating on the things I can’t actually control.
There are just so many layers to sort through… and I’ll always be a work in progress so at what point am I complete enough to safely seek my match?
And I’m realizing certain things that I want, but which things can I live without and which ones will their absence always leave me with a longing? There’s a line between settling and accepting that nothing is perfect; can I be satisfied that I’ve found the right middle ground?
I know I’m lucky to have even experienced some of these things to know I want them.
And I have a sneaking suspicion none of these questions would matter if I found the right one. But until then I suppose they’ll continue to plague me at random, ’cause where would I be if I couldn’t find something to fret over? o_O

Gnomes who say gni!
Posted by Jade, Filed under General
The guys have been really fueling my gnome love lately but I’ve been good! I haven’t bought any gnome stuff in a long, long time and I think I deserve a treat for that…….in the form of new gnomes! Do you have any idea how hard it is for me to pass up a gnome on sale?! And they’re always on clearance this time of year!
I’ve always wanted to have a charm bracelet and fill it with really unique and/or sentimental charms, and now that I’ve seen this silver gnome charm, I don’t know if I’ll be able to resist much longer. It’s too cute!!
And we’ve got two trees in the back yard that are the perfect width apart for a hammock, but until I get one, I could settle for this sleepy gnome as a placeholder Wink Once I get a hammock, he can guard it.
And I really, really love this leapfrog gnome statue. I love that look of hand-carved wood. I have a similar one of a gnome on a turtle– I call them Gandalf and Shadowfax. (Yes, I name my gnomes. Leave me alone :-P)
But I could talk myself out of all of those in favor of this book– How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack. Really?!
Citation:
Move over zombies and adolescent vampires. There”s a new threat in town–and it”s only twelve inches tall. “How to Survive a Garden Gnome Attack” is the only comprehensive survival guide that will help prevent, prepare for, and ward off an imminent home invasion by the common garden gnome.

Yes. Yes. And yes. Please. How could that not be hilarious?! I may hold out and see if I can talk someone into gifting it for my Birthday, but I’ll definitely order it asap.

Figuring it out…
Posted by Jade, Filed under Health
Alright I think I’ve got this allergy thing figured out. When I have a fever is when I’m most miserable, and I absolutely have to stay on top of being medicated or it just comes right back. I’ve been feeling the worst right after sleep and that’s because I go so long without taking anything for the fever. So I’ve got that sorted now– alternating Tylenol and Ibuprofen every 4 hours. Kristi suggested that and I looked it up and found that’s a pretty common recommendation, so that’s what I’m doing now. I’ll set alarms when I sleep and have the next dose handy so maybe I can finally get this under control.
The rash is getting worse. I’d be worried, but I remember it going this way before. It’s just really slow to develop. I’m taking Benadryl for that and I’ve got some hydrocortisone cream for areas that are really bad, like my ears.
Other people are freaking me out– they think the reaction is either too severe or lasting too long to be just an allergy, but drug allergies aren’t like food allergies or side effects of diet pills, this is deep in my system and will take a while to fully work its way out. I keep jumping on Google to read up and reassure myself, so I know it’s not uncommon for it to really last. The fever is what concerns me most knowing the effects a prolonged fever can have, but now that I see that it’s not just going to fade out I can keep medicated for a few days to keep it down. In a few days I’ll lay off the meds and see if it’s gone.
I just hope the rash doesn’t get too much worse. It’s not overly noticeable in any visible spots right now, I just look pink unless you know to look for it, but if those areas start looking like my legs and chest do right now, I’m hiding in my room– work be damned.

Caleb James Harper
Posted by Jade, Filed under General
Would you just look at that cute little face? Caleb James Harper was born just after lunch today–8 pounds 11 ounces 20 1/2 inches, and a head full of hair!
I’m so excited for my brother. I know he and Ashley are gonna be fantastic parents. They’re such a great couple and they’ve done an amazing job getting their lives in order. I only wish they weren’t all the way in Oklahoma. I have no idea when I’ll get to meet this precious little boy.
James and Ashley are both pretty active on Facebook so I know I’ll get to keep up with him there. And I can’t wait for statuses from my brother when he starts getting frazzled– they won’t need a sleep aid, that little boy is gonna keep them worn out! And by Christmas Aunt Jade will have sent plenty of noisy toys to aid him in his quest Wink

Itchy
Posted by Jade, Filed under Health
Back in September of 2005 I found out I had mono. This was after numerous doctor visits here in Valdosta– multiple docs telling me they didn’t know what was wrong, but I didn’t have strep throat and I didn’t have mono. They were all wrong, and I’d been given some amoxicillin anyway. By the time I found out I had mono, I’d just completed all doses of the amoxicillin and lucky me, found out there’s a fun reaction in your body when you take amoxicillin while you have mono– an itchy rash all over your body! It took a long while, but it finally worked its way out of my system.
Fast forward to now– I’ve been dealing with persistent sinus problems since the move. I always have minor problems this time of year with the season changing and all the dust in moving irritated my sinuses even more and just really set it off this year. So Keegan had some antibiotics leftover from a sinus infection earlier this year so he brought me those. I took a dose Wednesday afternoon at 2. By 5am I woke up with a mild fever and I thought my skin was just flushed from the fever. I took some ibuprofen and fell back asleep about an hour later. When I got up for work the fever was gone but I was still flushed. I just assumed the sinus problems were finally morphing into a full-blown infection. I took another dose of the antibiotics and headed to work. I was about halfway there when I realized what was going on. I stuck it out at work for a little while but decided to head home before it got too bad.
Fever was all over the place all day. My body ached like I’d had the flu for a week. This time I didn’t get a splotchy rash, I was just pink all over and mildly itchy, but it felt like a sunburn– between that and the fever I was burning up and freezing simultaneously all day. Illness is really better than any quick weight loss diets ’cause I didn’t eat anything till late in the evening. I just took naps and curled up on the couch to watch the boys play Halo.
Today I’ve had a really low fever off and on and my skin is still really irritated, but it’s not giving me that burning sensation, the itching is a little more annoying though. I’m hoping it’ll be all out of my system tomorrow ’cause I have to work at 5am and that’s just gonna be annoying.
So yep, I guess I’m allergic to amoxicillin. I was told today that my paternal grandmother is as well, so no surprise. I know I’ve taken it many times before but I also know allergies like that are often developed later. Most everyone on my Mom’s side shows an allergy to sulfa later in life so I think I’m just going to be safe and assume I will too, ’cause I really don’t want to do this again. Twice is most definitely enough, thanks.

Sitting pretty
Posted by Jade, Filed under Shopping
Now that the fire pit is all set up, I need to find a good, comfy chair. We’ve got some metal folding chairs, but I need something a little better than that. We’re out there for hours at a time so my derriere needs something a little more accommodating. I tend to want to curl up around the fire too and a metal folding chair isn’t so great for that.
I really like the design on this Picnic Time folding chair I found. I love the little organizer on the side– great for tossing my phone in and keeping up with the big lighter we use for the fire pit. And the attached table is perfect for my wine glass. I hate just sitting it in the grass. I always run a higher risk of knocking it over when it’s out of my line of sight. The blue ones are on sale right now, but they’re still a little higher than I want to pay for a chair.
I’m really aiming for one of these folding rocking chairs. I already know these folding chairs are comfy– there’s just enough give in the material to curl up in and be super cozy. Making it a rocking chair is just icing on a chocolate cake! And I can easily fold it up to sit it inside without it taking up too much room or just leave it out– they handle a little rain just fine.
I really hope I can find one of the rocking chairs at a good price, but I’m open to suggestions too. Do you have a favorite chair for sitting around outside?

Holla if ya hear me…
Posted by Jade, Filed under Technology
Cable is hooked up! And with our new service discounts in place, I decided to get a DVR. I’m SO excited about that. I’ve got finding shows online down to a science but now I don’t have to worry about it. Take that, Hulu :-P! I have a feeling I might pick up another show or two now that it’ll be easier to keep up with. (Cue Kristi telling me what I need to start next…) In another month Lowe’s will go back to closing at 9, which used to mean that I’d have to wait a few hours to watch The Office just because I’d missed the beginning, but now I can start it whenever I get home! Too damn convenient.
Of course the box is HD too so I’ll finally get a chance to use my television to its potential. Just need a blu ray player now and I’ll be set. Heaven help me if I ever get the notion to try to rebuild my DVD collection in blu ray. I just hope technology never makes that necessary like it sort of did with VHS. Otherwise, someone smack me if I ever start talking about it.
Now I’ve got tv to watch and interwebs to surf.
