STS-132 Space Shuttle Mission Tweetup in Houston! Join us on Wednesday, May 19, 2010

@NASA Twitter followers are invited to Houston, the home of Mission Control, to learn about a space shuttle mission in person. NASA is hosting this special Tweetup on May 19 at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The event will provide NASA Twitter followers with the opportunity to take a tour of NASA's Johnson Space Center, view the Mission Control Center and astronaut training facilities. Tweeps also will be able to speak with flight directors, engineers, astronauts and trainers. The Tweetup will include a "meet and greet" session to allow participants to mingle with fellow Tweeps and the staff behind the tweets on @NASA.

Space shuttle Atlantis is targeted to launch at 2:20 p.m. EDT on May 14 on its STS-132 mission to the International Space Station.

Registration for the STS-132 Launch Tweetup at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida is closed. To follow the Tweetup participants as they experience the launch, visit http://twitter.com/nasatweetup/sts-132-launch.

    What is a Tweetup?
A Tweetup is an informal meeting of people who use the social messaging medium Twitter. This Tweetup is an opportunity at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Florida.

    How do I register?
Registration opens at 9 a.m. CDT/10 a.m. EDT on Friday, April 30 on this page and closes at 9 a.m. CDT/10 a.m. EDT Monday, May 3. NASA will randomly select 100 individuals on Twitter from a pool of registrants who sign up on the Web. Additional registrants will be added to a waitlist. Registration will be open for 72 hours.

Limit one entry per person. In the case of multiple entries for the same individual, only the first entry received will be considered. Registration is for one person only (you) and is non-transferrable.

    What are the registration requirements?
Registration indicates your intent to travel to NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston and attend the event in person. You are responsible for your own expenses for travel, lodging, local transportation, food and other amenities. Once you are on-site each day at Johnson Space Center, NASA will provide transportation.

NASA's Johnson Space Center is a government facility. To be admitted, you will need to show a government-issued identification (driver's license or passport) that matches the name provided on the registration. Those without proper identification cannot be admitted. All registrants must be at least 18 years old.

Can I register if I am not a U.S. citizen?
Yes, non-U.S. citizens may register to attend the Tweetup in Houston. However, you will need to complete an additional step to receive clearance to enter the Johnson Space Center. Please choose the "non-U.S. citizen" option in the state drop-down menu during registration. On-site, you will need to show government-issued photo identification, such as a passport, that matches the name provided on the registration. Those without proper identification cannot be admitted. All registrants must be at least 18 years old.

Do I need to have a Twitter account to register?
Yes. This event is designed for Twitter users who follow @NASA and other NASA Twitter accounts. The goal of NASA Tweetups is to allow people who regularly interact with each other via Twitter to meet in person and discuss one of their favorite subjects: NASA.

Does my registration include a guest?
Because of space limitations, you may not bring a guest. Each registration provides a place for one person only. Each individual wishing to attend must submit a separate registration.

What if I cannot come to Houston?
If you cannot come to Houston to attend in person, you do not need to register for the Tweetup. However, you can still plan to follow the mission of space shuttle Atlantis on NASA TV. NASA also will provide regular launch and mission updates on @NASA.

If you can't make this Tweetup, don't despair; NASA is planning others in the future at various agency locations.

When will I know if I made it?
After NASA has received and processed the registrations and selected the participants, an e-mail with confirmation information and additional instructions will be sent to the confirmed Tweeps and those on the waitlist. We expect to send notifications by May 6, or sooner.

What if the space shuttle's launch date changes?
The STS-132 Mission Tweetup should not be impacted by a launch delay. Even if the shuttle flight is postponed, NASA still will host the Tweetup on May 19 in Houston.

For more information about space shuttle Atlantis' STS-132 mission, visit http://www.nasa.gov/shuttle.

Have a question? Need more information? Help is available by sending an email to Jsc-pao-events@mail.nasa.gov.

Come back at 9 a.m. CDT/10 a.m. EDT on Friday, April 30 to sign up.

To be eligible for this opportunity, you must be eighteen (18) years of age or older at the time of entry. Tweeps must complete and submit the entry form located above during the registration period. Limit one entry per person. In the case of multiple entries for the same individual, only the first entry received will be considered. Registration opens at 10 a.m. EDT on Friday, April 30, and closes at 10 a.m. Monday, May 3.

      Double Black Holes
This image from the Chandra X-ray Observatory shows the central region of the starburst galaxy M82 and contains two bright X-ray sources of special interest. New studies with Chandra and ESA's XMM-Newton show that these two sources may be intermediate-mass black holes, with masses in between those of the stellar-mass and supermassive variety. These "survivor" black holes avoided falling into the center of the galaxy and could be examples of the seeds required for the growth of supermassive black holes in galaxies, including the one in the Milky Way.

This is the first case where good evidence for more than one mid-sized black hole exists in a single galaxy. The evidence comes from how their X-ray emission varies over time and analysis of their X-ray brightness and spectra, i.e., the distribution of X-rays with energy. These results are interesting because they may help address the mystery of how supermassive black holes in the centers of galaxies form. M82 is located about 12 million light years from Earth and is the nearest place to us where the conditions are similar to those in the early Universe, with lots of stars forming.

Multiple observations of M82 have been made with Chandra beginning soon after launch. The Chandra data shown here were not used in the new research because the X-ray sources are so bright that some distortion is introduced into the X-ray spectra. To combat this, the pointing of Chandra is changed so that images of the sources are deliberately blurred, producing fewer counts in each pixel.
